In the early '90s I started a small personal website called "The City" which covered skateboarding in New York. By 1999 Metrospective.com had emerged with a mission to feature raw local talent and bring some much needed exposure to New York. While the dreaded Y2K didn't end the world the way some people theorized, the new millenium brought about a number of earth-shattering events and tragedies that scarred New York skateboarding deeply. New York needed something positive, so with the help of Kerel Roach and a lot of good friends, I hosted the first
"All City Skate Jam".
This was my tribute to skateboarding in the '80s and '90s back when everyone skated the streets together and skateboarding in New York was more of a community. This was the first event of its kind to hit NYC and it helped pave the way for many larger events to follow.
In 2003 I wanted to bring something new but very familiar to the table, something that represented the integrity, quality, and style that I knew and grew up with skateboarding, I wanted to start something "Official". It all started very humbly out of my basement in New York with a few clean pieces that I designed myself and were all manufactured here in America. It was more costly this way but quality was important. In the beginning I was just hooking my homies up with product to skate, eventually that grew into something more. With a few close friends, that clique became a team and flew under the flag of Official Skateboards. Still looking to continue the support I had for skateboarding in New York, for both the locals and the other New York-based brands and companies Metrospective.com continued on as OfficialNewYork.com.
Today, not much has changed, a little older and a little wiser we're still pushing in the streets skating like I was with my friends when I was 12.
